What is Silviculture?

Defined as the commercial production of timber by growing and cultivating trees. Silviculture has been practiced in Trinidad and Tobago since before independence in 1962. Primary tree species used in Silviculture are Teak, Mahogany, Appamat, Cedar, Purple heart, Green heart. Silviculture is used as a long term investment and is popular in South America especially in Peru where there are Government incentivized national programs. (ref)

In addition to the added value that trees can bring from lumber over the years, the growing forest also has ecological benefits. Trees are carbon sinks which are ideal for the planet at this time of global warming. They take carbon dioxide directly from the air and utilize it in their tissues. Tree roots also stabilize soil, preventing erosion and controlling water run-off. This long term investment pays off in more ways that one!

How does it work ?

As with any engineered system, a certain degree of monitoring and maintenance is required. However, with the right engineering controls high yields of both plants and fish can be obtained in a very small square foot area.

REMco has proprietary technology which will enable you to keep a track of the tree's development over time. Thus ensuring complete transparency to the partners/investors.

The land owner invests in the saplings which REMco will then look after for a prescribed period. This type of investment is for landowners with significant acreage who are looking for high returns in the long run.

Bamboo is also being used as a building material for many applications such as spoons, clothes pins, flooring, virtually any application that hardwoods are used for. This is all in spite of bamboo being a fast growing grass!

Conclusion

This is a longer term investment which is ideal for those with remote sites. Wood products such as Teak, Mahogany and Pine can recover a premium value over a 25 year period.

Another benefit besides the eventual high rate of return, is that the site can still be utilized for other applications such as Eco Lodges or as a venue for small events.
